Socialization of Veterans Using Virtual Reality

The purpose of this study was to capture the essence of socialization in virtual reality as a Ph.D. dissertation topic at Florida Institute of Technology - Human-Centered Design. This study used a phenomenology methodology to capture the experiences of beneficial features of players who use virtual reality. The study addresses and defines problems and issues concerning health concerns among military veterans; including contributing factors like loneliness, isolation, treatment eligibility within the Veteran’s Administration (VA), long wait times at VA medical centers (for medical attention), negative perceptions and associations of VA health care facilities, medical centers and military related organizations, and stigmas associated with treatment.

HyperSlides: Dynamic Presentation Prototyping

Presentations are a crucial form of modern communication,
yet there is a dissonance between everyday practices with
presentation tools and best practices from the presentation
literature. We conducted a grounded theory study to gain a better understanding of the activity of presenting,
discovering the potential for a more dynamic, automated, and story-centered approach to prototyping slide presentations that are themselves dynamic in their ability to help presenters rehearse and deliver their story.

My Role:

Needs analysis; researching; subject recruitment; interviewing; observing; transcribing; data collection; and reducing data/categorizing.

Time Frame:

Four months.

Results:

Publication and presentation at CHI'13.
